Why Does a Full Pipe Trigger an Empty Pipe Alarm?

An electromagnetic transmitter detects an empty pipe by monitoring the electrical resistance between its measurement electrodes and the fluid ground. If the circuit is broken, the alarm trips. In a full pipe, this circuit can break due to:

  1. Electrode Coating (Fouling): Sticky polymers, wastewater sludge, or chemical scales can build up over the electrodes. This insulating layer blocks the microvolt signal, convincing the transmitter that air has replaced the fluid.
