Troubleshooting Magmeter Excitation Failure: Causes and Prevention

In industries ranging from municipal wastewater treatment to chemical dosing, electromagnetic flowmeters (magmeters) are preferred for their obstruction-free, high-accuracy measurements. However, one of the most common diagnostic errors engineers encounter is "Excitation Failure." When the transmitter loses its connection or signal from the magnetic field coils inside the sensor, the meter can no longer calculate fluid velocity. This guide by RB Flowmeter explores why this happens and how to prevent it.

Troubleshooting Magmeter Excitation Failure

What Causes Excitation Failure?

1. Moisture Ingress: This is the leading culprit in water distribution networks and wastewater plants. If the junction box or sensor body is not sealed correctly, humidity or water enters, shorting out the excitation coils.

2. Cable Degradation or Loose Wiring: Constant vibration in industrial plants can loosen terminal connections. Additionally, using non-shielded cables near high-voltage lines can introduce electromagnetic noise that mimics coil failures.

3. Severe Thermal Shock: Rapid temperature changes can damage internal wiring or break the seals between the liner and the meter body.

The RB Flowmeter Solution: Engineered Against Failure

To eliminate the environmental vulnerabilities that cause coil damage, RB Flowmeter’s RBEF and RBHEF Series are designed with extreme durability in mind:

• Robust All-Welded Construction: The steel flow body of the RBEF/RBHEF is fully welded and pressure-tested at the factory. This hermetic seal ensures that external liquids cannot penetrate the coil housing.

IP68 Waterproofing: With optionally IP68 rated sensors, our meters can be continuously submerged in deep chambers or outdoor wells without risking moisture-induced short circuits.

Advanced Internal Diagnostics: Our smart transmitters immediately isolate the issue—letting operators know if the fault lies in a disconnected electrode, a broken coil wire, or an empty pipe condition.
